Work Resumes on MRT Line Viaduct After Metal Bar Fall

Construction of Jurong Region Line resumes after investigation into incident.

Construction work on the viaduct for the Jurong Region Line (JRL) resumed after a metal bar fell onto the road at the junction of Jurong West Avenue 2 and Jalan Bahar on October 3, 2024. The incident, which occurred at around 9:30 AM, was captured in a video shared on SG Road Vigilante’s Facebook page. The footage shows the metal bar narrowly missing a lorry turning at the intersection.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) confirmed that no work was being carried out at the time of the fall and that there were no injuries or damage. Following the incident, a safety timeout was implemented at the worksite.

The LTA stated that investigations revealed the fall was caused by “material fatigue,” which occurs when structural elements crack due to stress. The pre-tensioning bar, which is used to strengthen concrete in the construction process, was found to have failed due to this fatigue. China Railway Construction Corporation is the main contractor for the JRL project.
