US Expects India to Deepen Engagement with Ukraine

India aims to balance ties amid global tensions

WASHINGTON – US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell announced on July 30 that India is likely to intensify its involvement with Ukraine. The remarks came during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, highlighting India’s evolving global role and potential contributions to resolving the Ukraine conflict.

Indian Engagement
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited Moscow in July, coinciding with international criticism of Russia following a missile strike in Kyiv that killed 44 people. Reports suggest that Mr. Modi is planning a visit to Ukraine in August, which would mark his first since Russia’s 2022 invasion.

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, speaking in Tokyo on July 29, affirmed India’s commitment to fostering negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. He noted, “We do believe we should be more active there,” and hinted at increased diplomatic interactions with both nations.

US-India Relations
The United States has been strengthening ties with India to counterbalance China’s growing influence. However, India’s historical and economic connections with Russia have complicated its position. While New Delhi has resisted calls to distance itself from Moscow, Mr. Campbell emphasized the significance of the US-India relationship:

Strategic Importance: “India is probably the most important relationship for the United States to get right,” Mr. Campbell stated.
Independent Approach: Acknowledging India’s stance, he added, “India is a great power… They will never be a formal ally, but we can still have the strongest of relationships.”
Broader Context
India’s approach to the Ukraine conflict has been cautious, maintaining dialogue with both sides. At the G-7 summit in Italy, Mr. Modi met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, further showcasing India’s interest in promoting peace.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the need for a “just and enduring peace” during discussions with Mr. Jaishankar in Japan on July 28.

India’s balancing act reflects its aspirations for a responsible global role, as it navigates complex geopolitical dynamics involving Russia, the US, and China.
