Trump Survives Assassination Attempt: A Surreal Experience

Former US President Donald Trump reflects on his survival following a gun attack at a campaign rally.

Former President Donald Trump, 78, shared his shocking experience after surviving an assassination attempt on July 13, 2024, during a campaign rally in Washington. In an interview with the New York Post, Trump expressed disbelief, stating, “I’m supposed to be dead.” He recalled the surreal moment with a bandage covering his right ear, revealing he was struck by a bullet aimed at him. The attack, which resulted in the death of a bystander and injuries to two others, could have claimed Trump’s life had he not tilted his head at the moment of the shooting.

Reflecting on the miracle of his survival, Trump commented, “By luck or by God, many people are saying it’s by God, I’m still here.” He praised the Secret Service agents for their swift action, noting that they neutralized the shooter with a single shot. The image of him raising a defiant fist, being escorted by agents, quickly became a viral sensation and was described as “the most iconic photo” by many.

Following the attack, Trump rewrote the speech he had planned for the Republican National Convention, choosing a message of unity instead of criticism toward the Biden administration. He acknowledged the deep divisions within the country, stating, “People are very divided,” but hoped for a speech that would help bring the nation together.
