Details about the assassination attempt on Donald Trump during a campaign rally on July 13, 2024.
Former President Donald Trump was shot in the right ear on July 13, 2024, during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, about 50 kilometers north of Pittsburgh. The shooting, which led to the death of the 20-year-old gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, also left one rally attendee dead and two others critically injured.
Trump, 78, was speaking at the rally when gunshots rang out just six minutes into his speech. He had been addressing the rise in border crossings under President Joe Biden’s administration when the shots were fired. The crowd’s panicked response included cries of “duck,” as Trump grabbed his right ear before collapsing behind the podium.
Secret Service agents immediately intervened, shielding him as he was rushed off stage. Trump was seen with blood on his ear and face before being quickly escorted away.
The FBI later identified the shooter, Crooks, who was from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, about 70 kilometers from the rally site. The motive for the attack remains unclear, and the investigation into the assassination attempt is ongoing.
