Trump backs his running mate J.D. Vance over controversial remarks, despite political backlash.
WASHINGTON – On July 29, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump defended his vice-presidential pick, Senator J.D. Vance, over past remarks about “childless cat ladies,” which have resurfaced and sparked a political controversy ahead of the 2024 election.
The comments, made by Mr. Vance in 2021, criticized Vice-President Kamala Harris and other Democrats, calling them “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives.” These remarks have gone viral since Mr. Vance was selected as Trump’s running mate earlier in July.
The backlash to Vance’s comments has raised concerns among some political strategists, who warn that such remarks could alienate key voter groups in critical swing states, where the election could be decided by a narrow margin.
In response, Trump defended his running mate, asserting that the comments reflected Vance’s strong support for traditional family values. As the likely Democratic presidential nominee, Kamala Harris is expected to be Trump’s primary opponent in the November 5 election after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race.
