Bangladeshi and Myanmar workers receive awards for life-saving bravery.
Two migrant workers, Mr. Jahir and Mr. Sa Thu Ya Aung, were awarded the SCDF Community Lifesaver Award for rescuing a three-year-old boy from a dangerous third-story ledge. The incident, which occurred on 20/10/2024, captured public attention as a video of the daring rescue went viral.
The Rescue
Mr. Jahir, a 34-year-old lorry driver, was cycling home when he saw a crowd and the boy standing frozen on the ledge. Inspired by thoughts of his own son back in Bangladesh, he acted quickly, attempting to gain access to the flat and climbing the ledge.
Joining him was Mr. Sa Thu Ya, a 26-year-old painter, who had been on his way to a church event. Together, they devised a plan to reach the boy, navigating the narrow ledge with careful precision.
Mr. Thu Ya approached the boy slowly, scooped him into his arms, and placed him safely back into the flat. Both men then safely descended to the ground.
Public Recognition
On 25/10/2024, at the SCDF Division Headquarters, the men were honored for their bravery. Commander Lim Beng Hui praised their courage, emphasizing their public-spirited actions.
Mr. Jahir humbly noted, “The award is just a bonus. The real reward is saving the boy.”
A police investigation into the incident is ongoing, with a 25-year-old woman assisting inquiries regarding negligence.
