Two eateries in Little India face suspension and fines following hygiene violations.
Food Safety Breaches Lead to Suspensions
The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has suspended the operating licenses of two popular Little India eateries, The Banana Leaf Apolo and Shahi Briyani House, due to hygiene lapses. Both establishments were found to have violated food safety regulations, resulting in their licenses being suspended from November 8 to November 21. In addition, they were fined $1,000 and $1,100 respectively.
Hygiene Issues Identified
The Banana Leaf Apolo, known for its Indian cuisine, accumulated 14 demerit points within a 12-month period. These points were given for poor hygiene conditions, including dirty premises and appliances, as well as selling unclean food. Meanwhile, Shahi Briyani House had accumulated 16 demerit points due to failing to maintain cleanliness, dealing with an infestation issue, and not registering an employee.
Under SFA guidelines, food establishments that earn 12 or more demerit points within a year are subject to license suspension, which can range from two to four weeks, or even cancellation.
Consequences for Staff
In line with the suspension, all food handlers and hygiene officers working at these eateries must undergo re-certification in food safety before being allowed to return to their duties.
To report any food safety concerns, the public is encouraged to use the SFA’s online feedback form or contact the SFA directly at their Contact Centre.
