Tharman Shanmugaratnam Shifts Focus: From PM Dreams to Presidential Aspirations

Singaporeans Embrace Tharman as a Presidential Candidate, Despite PM Hopes

Tharman Shanmugaratnam, a well-respected figure in Singaporean politics, has announced his resignation from all his political roles, including his position in the People’s Action Party (PAP), to pursue the presidency in the upcoming elections. The 66-year-old veteran, once a favorite for Prime Minister, now seeks a higher, yet non-political role in Singapore’s governance, believing the presidency is where he can serve the nation best.

The announcement was met with overwhelming support, as Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong endorsed Tharman’s presidential bid, assuring confidence in his capabilities. Public sentiment also favors Tharman’s shift, with a RICE poll revealing 63% of respondents supporting his candidacy.

While many Singaporeans hoped for Tharman to take over as the next Prime Minister, his own words in 2016 and his reluctance for the role have led him to decline the position. Despite this, public enthusiasm for him as PM had been palpable, with surveys showing his widespread popularity. A 2016 poll revealed that 55% of respondents viewed Tharman as their first choice for Prime Minister.

Tharman’s popularity spans beyond his political party, with even opposition figures recognizing his impressive track record and intellect. His career includes prestigious roles, such as Deputy Prime Minister, Senior Minister, and Coordinating Minister for Social Policies, showcasing his extensive contributions to Singapore’s development.

Tharman’s presidential candidacy is expected to be a smooth transition, as his record as an effective leader and his broad popularity positions him as a near-certain winner. His qualifications, including his economics background and diplomatic experience, make him a highly suitable candidate for the role of Head of State. Though his exit from PAP marks a significant political shift, his relationships and influence will likely ensure a balanced approach in his presidency, without major conflicts.
