Smoother Rides: 11-Year Upgrade to the North-South and East-West MRT Lines

Major upgrades to Singapore’s oldest MRT lines aim to improve reliability and passenger experience.

Singapore – The North-South and East-West MRT lines, which have been in operation for 36 years, are the most heavily used on the MRT network. Over the last 11 years, the two lines, covering 200km of tracks, have undergone significant upgrades to enhance efficiency and provide smoother rides for passengers. These improvements are part of a multi-phase modernization plan, with the final phase scheduled for completion by December 2023.

1. Replacement of 188,000 Sleepers (Completed in 2016)
In 2013, the replacement of 188,000 timber sleepers with more durable concrete ones began, taking three years to finish. The concrete sleepers help distribute the load of the trains more effectively, resulting in a smoother ride for commuters.

2. New Power Rail (Completed in 2017)
The third rail, which provides the electricity to run the trains, was completely replaced between 2015 and 2017. The old power rail system had been responsible for major disruptions in 2011, affecting over 200,000 passengers. The new system ensures more reliable power supply, reducing the risk of disruptions.

3. More Efficient Signalling System (Completed in 2018)
Upgraded signalling systems allow trains to operate at intervals as short as 100 seconds, improving the flow of traffic and increasing the peak-hour capacity by 20%. This work, started in 2012, significantly enhances the frequency and efficiency of trains.

4. New Trains (Purchased in 2018 and 2020)
The oldest trains, dating back to 1987, are being replaced with 106 new trains. 66 trains were purchased in 2018, and 40 more in 2020. These new trains come equipped with self-diagnosis capabilities to detect early faults, particularly in the air-conditioning and passenger information systems. Seven trains are already in service, with 19 more undergoing testing. All 106 trains are expected to be delivered by 2026.

5. Renewal of Power Supply System (Completed in 2023)
The upgrade of the power supply system involved replacing approximately 1,300km of power cables, 250km of fibre-optic cables, and hundreds of other components across 171 substations. This system allows for real-time monitoring, helping operators detect potential faults before they escalate, ensuring greater reliability.

6. Fresh Track Circuit System (To be completed in 2023)
The track circuit system, which monitors train locations, has been updated with 1,100 new track circuits. This system not only improves the speed of recovery in the event of a signalling failure but also incorporates predictive capabilities to detect and address track circuit issues proactively.

These extensive upgrades are aimed at enhancing the comfort, reliability, and safety of the MRT system, ensuring that Singapore’s most used rail lines are better equipped to handle increasing ridership and future transportation demands.
