Interactive showcase to highlight digital transformation and inclusivity
SINGAPORE – The library@orchard will temporarily close its doors for refurbishment starting October 28, 2024, but visitors can look forward to an immersive Smart Nation exhibition during its transformation.
The initiative, titled #Heart&Soul: Connected by Smart Nation, was announced by Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo during the library’s closing event at Orchard Gateway shopping centre. Slated for launch in the second half of 2025, the exhibition aims to highlight the role of digital technologies in creating a connected and inclusive society.
A Digital Learning Journey
The exhibition will immerse visitors in the possibilities of digital transformation, helping them gain confidence and skills in navigating the digital landscape. Mrs. Teo, who also oversees Smart Nation and Cybersecurity initiatives, emphasized its broader goal: “We’ll create an engaging environment where Singaporeans can explore how digital technologies connect our past, present, and future.”
Mrs. Teo also underscored the crucial role of libraries in fostering digital literacy and combating misinformation. “Libraries allow people to discern fact from fiction, empowering citizens to navigate today’s complex information streams effectively,” she added.
Renovation Plans and Future Offerings
The National Library Board (NLB) announced in September that the library@orchard will undergo a two-year refurbishment, reopening in the second half of 2026. The revamped space will feature innovative services and vibrant areas to encourage exploration and creativity.
Ms. Sheila Jang, the library’s manager, shared her enthusiasm for the new additions: “We’re excited to introduce programme spaces where visitors can tinker with and experiment with cutting-edge technologies.”
While the closure brings a sense of nostalgia for regular patrons, many eagerly anticipate the library’s transformation. Chen Zhi Meng, a 31-year-old game programmer and frequent visitor, shared: “I’ll miss having this quiet space to work and relax, but I’m looking forward to the new offerings after the revamp.”
Looking Ahead
The #Heart&Soul: Connected by Smart Nation exhibition and the library’s renovations reflect Singapore’s commitment to fostering digital inclusivity and lifelong learning. As library@orchard redefines its role as a hub for innovation, the initiative aims to inspire patrons to embrace and thrive in a technology-driven world.
