The Singapore Red Cross provides crucial supplies to Gaza, partnering with local organizations to address immediate humanitarian needs.
Singapore Red Cross Sends Relief Aid to Gaza
In response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) has committed US$200,000 (S$273,000) worth of relief supplies to support the victims. The aid includes essential items such as hygiene kits, clean water, food provisions, and medical consumables, including wheelchairs.
To enhance the delivery of aid, the SRC has deployed a staff member to Cairo, Egypt, to collaborate with the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC). Together, they are identifying urgent needs in Gaza and facilitating the transportation of relief supplies through the Rafah border crossing, the only entry point between Egypt and Gaza.
Efforts to Address Humanitarian Crisis
Despite efforts to deliver food, water, and medical supplies via the Egyptian border, the amount of aid is insufficient to meet the vast needs on the ground. Reports indicate that affected communities in Gaza are facing severe shortages of fuel, water, and food, and medical supplies are running out rapidly.
The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has been providing essential services under extremely challenging conditions, but their resources are strained. The SRC has expressed concern about the lack of critical supplies and infrastructure, which have worsened the humanitarian situation.
Commitment to Protect Civilians
Benjamin William, CEO of SRC, emphasized the unimaginable hardships faced by families, children, women, and the elderly in Gaza. He called on all parties involved to adhere to international humanitarian law and prioritize the protection of civilians, including humanitarian workers, healthcare providers, and doctors.
Ongoing Efforts and Public Appeal
In addition to the $270K aid, the SRC has launched a public fundraising appeal for relief and recovery efforts, which will close on Jan 31, 2024. Previously, the SRC pledged US$150,000 to the cause, and the Singapore Government contributed $300,000 toward the relief operations.
