New book, “For All Ages, Singapore Polytechnic At Seventy,” highlights the polytechnic’s role in education transformation.
Reflecting on 70 Years of Educational Impact
Singapore Polytechnic (SP) marked its upcoming 70th anniversary with the launch of a commemorative book, “For All Ages, Singapore Polytechnic At Seventy”, highlighting its transformation and significant contributions to polytechnic education in Singapore. The event, held at the Dover campus, featured Education Minister Chan Chun Sing as the guest of honor.
1. Adapting to the Evolving Workforce
Over the past five years, SP has significantly expanded its role in training working adults, increasing the number of lecturers teaching adult learners from 25% in 2016 to 73% in 2021. As the first polytechnic in Singapore, SP’s mission evolved to not only cater to fresh school-leavers but also to reskill the adult workforce, particularly for the digital revolution.
To meet these demands, SP incorporated flexible learning options such as bite-sized microcredentials and fully online courses, helping working adults acquire industry-recognized skills at their own pace.
2. Responding to Industry Needs
SP Principal Soh Wai Wah emphasized that higher learning institutions must shift their focus toward reskilling adults in response to evolving industries. To support this, SP introduced new specialist diplomas in areas like full-stack web development and computing architecture, with plans to increase online learning for continuing education and training (CET) courses to 70%.
Additionally, SP has adopted a “flipped learning” approach for younger students, where they view lectures online before attending face-to-face tutorials. This method has helped students develop greater self-directed learning habits and improved outcomes for weaker students.
3. Collaborating with Employers
As part of its efforts to connect students with the workforce, SP signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF). This partnership aims to enhance employment opportunities for SP students across 16 sectors, including manufacturing and maritime. In 2024, a new center will be established at SP to host exhibitions, workshops, and industry-specific events for students and mid-career switchers, further fostering industry connections.
The launch event not only celebrated SP’s rich history but also showcased its adaptability and forward-thinking approach to education and workforce development in Singapore.
