Singapore Installs Over 15,300 EV Charging Points in Push Towards 2030 Goal

The island nation aims for 60,000 EV chargers by the end of the decade.

Singapore has surpassed the 15,300 mark for electric vehicle (EV) charging points, bringing the country closer to its target of 60,000 installations by 2030. As of September 2024, 1,500 new charging points were added since the previous month’s tally.

Out of the current total, 7,100 chargers are publicly accessible, with the remainder located on private premises like condominiums. Public chargers primarily cater to overnight charging, but a growing number of fast chargers, capable of powering an EV battery from 20% to 80% in under an hour, are being installed for convenience.

The first of a new series of fast chargers was unveiled at the Woodlands Civic Centre carpark on 4 November. By March 2025, eight additional HDB commercial carparks will house fast chargers, with plans to expand to 120 chargers at 60 locations, including town centers and industrial premises.

Senior Minister of State for Transport Amy Khor highlighted that one-third of new cars registered in Singapore in 2024 were EVs, with light goods vehicles showing an even higher adoption rate at 44%.

The government has also introduced an EV guide promoting charging etiquette to address issues like charger hogging. Dr. Khor noted that charging operators might introduce levies to discourage improper usage if needed.

This initiative underscores Singapore’s commitment to fostering EV adoption and ensuring robust infrastructure to support the shift to sustainable transportation.
