Shell Oil Leak Prompts Beach Restrictions in Singapore

Authorities implement safety measures following environmental spill.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) has issued an advisory urging the public to avoid swimming and direct water activities near the beaches of East Coast Park, Kusu Island, St John’s Island, and Lazarus Island. This precautionary measure comes after an oil leak from Shell’s land-based pipeline at Pulau Bukom occurred on 20 October.

Incident Details
The leak, reported at 5:30 AM, resulted in oil spilling into a holding area and overflowing into the water channel between Bukom Island and Bukom Kecil. The Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) was alerted at 1 PM, and the leak was stopped by 3 PM.

Containment and Response
Oil-absorbent booms: Deployed at affected areas, including East Coast Park, West Coast Park, and Marina Barrage.
Cleanup efforts: Conducted by MPA, Shell, and Singapore Salvage Engineers using boats.
Monitoring tools: Drones and satellite capabilities activated by MPA to track oil spread.
Emergency response specialists have been engaged to manage the situation, while Shell assesses the volume of the spill.

Impact on Beaches
Sentosa Island’s Tanjong, Palawan, and Siloso beaches remain unaffected, with oil-absorbent booms placed as a precaution. The National Parks Board (NParks) reported no oil sightings at Sisters’ Islands Marine Park, Labrador Nature Reserve, or West Coast Park.

Public access to Labrador Nature Reserve and West Coast Park remains open.

Water Safety
National water agency PUB confirmed no oil contamination near desalination plants at Keppel Marina East and Jurong Island. Seawater quality readings remain normal, and plant operations are unaffected.

Ongoing Efforts
Shell and environmental authorities continue to monitor and address the situation, with updates provided via social media and official channels. Oil containment measures remain in place across key areas to mitigate further environmental risks.
