Agencies continue to monitor water quality and ensure no further impact from the oil spill.
The clean-up operation at Bukom Islands, following a significant oil leak from a Shell pipeline on October 20, is expected to be completed within a few days. The leak, which released over 30 tonnes of a mixture of oil and water into the sea, has not led to any new oil sightings as of 3 p.m. on October 22. The clean-up efforts include removing the remaining oil from containment booms and cleaning affected rocks and infrastructure between Pulau Bukom and Bukom Kechil.
Several government agencies, including the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), National Environment Agency (NEA), and PUB, the national water agency, are overseeing the operation. PUB is also actively monitoring seawater intake at nearby desalination plants, including Keppel Marina East and Jurong Island, with seawater quality remaining normal.
There have been no reports of damage to fish farms in the vicinity, and the agencies continue to keep a close watch on the situation. Despite no visible oil sightings at certain islands, members of the public are advised to avoid swimming and primary contact water activities at East Coast Park, Kusu Island, St John’s Island, Lazarus Island, Pulau Hantu, and Seringat Island as a precaution.
