Robotic Dog Mars Revolutionizes Security Operations at Seletar Bus Depot

Innovative technologies unveiled at SBS Transit’s inaugural security symposium.

For the past three months, Mars, an autonomous robotic dog, has been patrolling the perimeter of Seletar Bus Depot, enhancing security operations with cutting-edge technology. SBS Transit (SBST) highlighted Mars’ contributions during its first-ever security symposium held on November 20, showcasing the future of AI-powered security solutions.

Advanced Features of Mars
Mars, a Mobile Autonomous Robotic Surveillance (Mars) system, is an all-terrain, all-weather robot designed by local firm Weston Robot. It can cover 15km per charge, equipped with high-definition cameras, thermal imaging, and real-time video analytics. These capabilities allow Mars to detect intruders—whether human or animal—and tampering signs with precision.

Boosting Security Efficiency
Mars has redefined the role of security officers by taking over physical patrol duties, enabling personnel to focus on monitoring live video feeds and performing higher-level tasks. SBST group chief executive Jeffrey Sim emphasized how Mars enhances efficiency without replacing human efforts.

“Mars can see better at night, and its thermal cameras detect intrusions more effectively than the human eye,” said Sim, adding that the trial’s success might lead to Mars being deployed across all SBST bus and rail depots.

Expanding Technological Integration
The symposium also featured Project Sentinel, an intelligent security platform co-developed by SBST and Kabam Robotics. Sentinel consolidates data from various sources, including CCTV cameras and security robots, into a unified dashboard. This integration streamlines situational awareness, enabling swift responses to anomalies.

A trial for Project Sentinel is slated to begin at low-foot-traffic locations in early 2025, with scalability based on its success.

Future of Public Transport Security
SBST signed four agreements during the symposium to advance security measures:

Collaboration with Temasek Polytechnic to train officers in modern security strategies.
Partnerships with Weston Robot, Talonz Technologies, and the Security Solutions Association of Singapore to trial AI-driven security technologies at bus interchanges, depots, and MRT stations.
Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Baey Yam Keng underscored the importance of leveraging technology to protect Singapore’s public transport system, which is a high-risk target due to its accessibility and dense usage.

By integrating robotics and AI, SBST aims to set new benchmarks in ensuring public safety, fostering confidence among commuters, and future-proofing Singapore’s transportation infrastructure.
