Prosecutor Criticizes Man for Lack of Remorse in Attempted Rape Case

Yeo Zhuo Ping found guilty of multiple sexual offenses after violent attack on Thai disco singer.

A man, Yeo Zhuo Ping, 28, was found guilty of two counts of attempted rape and one count of attempted sexual assault after attacking a Thai disco singer following a night out at a bar. The incident, which took place on August 7, 2018, saw Yeo forcibly attempting to assault the victim in a multi-storey carpark after she agreed to accompany him for supper, but later decided to return home.

Yeo denied the charges, claiming that he was “knocked out” and could not remember the events. However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Christina Koh stated on November 18 that Yeo showed “completely no remorse.” The prosecutor criticized his defense tactics during the trial, particularly his unfounded accusations against the victim and the police, and called Yeo’s use of violence an aggravating factor.

The victim, who resisted Yeo’s advances and pleaded for release, was able to report the attack to the police, despite returning to Bangkok later that day. A medical examination upon her return revealed injuries consistent with sexual assault.

Yeo also pleaded guilty to two traffic offenses committed while out on bail for the sexual offenses, including drink-driving and dangerous driving. His sentencing will take place on December 6.
