Strengthening internal cohesion and preparing for the next general election
At the PAP Awards and Conference on November 23, 2024, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat emphasized the need for the People’s Action Party (PAP) to continue representing all Singaporeans, particularly as it deepens connections with younger voters. Despite past successes in uplifting Singaporeans and securing national interests, he acknowledged the challenges ahead, including global power shifts, technological disruptions, and pressing local issues like the cost of living and jobs.
DPM Heng urged PAP members to unite and earn a strong mandate in the upcoming general election, due by November 2025. He reflected on Singapore’s achievements, including securing essential resources like water and food, and emphasized the party’s commitment to addressing new concerns such as mental health, climate action, and the evolving needs of various communities.
He also praised outgoing party secretary-general Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong for his leadership and the legacy he leaves behind as the party transitions under Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. To navigate the rapidly changing external environment, DPM Heng called for renewed internal cohesion, urging party members to support PM Wong in taking Singapore forward.
As the PAP celebrates its 70th anniversary, the election of 12 new members to its Central Executive Committee (CEC) will shape the future leadership ahead of the next general election.
