Ong Ye Kung Visits Xinjiang to Strengthen Regional Partnerships

Health Minister engages in discussions on economic development, healthcare, and education in China’s western region.

Singapore’s Health Minister Ong Ye Kung is currently visiting the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region in China at the invitation of Ma Xingrui, the region’s leader. The visit underscores efforts to bolster ties between Southeast Asia and Xinjiang.

Key Highlights of the Visit
Discussions: Mr. Ong and Party Secretary Ma Xingrui addressed economic growth, healthcare advancements, and educational initiatives.
Hospital Visits:
Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region People’s Hospital.
First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University.
Xinjiang International Regional Hospital, scheduled to open in 2025, which will serve international patients, including those from Central Asia.
Cultural Engagement
Mr. Ong also explored the Tianshan Tianchi scenic area and the Xinjiang Regional Museum, gaining insights into the region’s rich history and cultural significance.

Rekindling Ties with an Old Friend
Mr. Ong and Mr. Ma share a history of collaboration, having co-chaired the Singapore-Guangdong Collaboration Council during Mr. Ma’s tenure as governor of Guangdong.

In his Facebook post, Mr. Ong remarked:

“It is a fascinating region, an interchange between Asia and Europe… Central Asia plays a unique role as a bridge between East and West.”

The visit highlights Singapore’s commitment to enhancing international cooperation and fostering meaningful relationships across diverse regions.
