Ong Ye Kung Emphasises the Importance of Strong Leadership Ahead of GE2025

Health Minister Highlights the Need for an Effective Government Amid Rising Geopolitical Tensions

Ahead of Singapore’s upcoming General Election (GE2025), Health Minister Ong Ye Kung has stressed the need for a competent and decisive government, especially in the face of increasing global instability and economic uncertainty. Speaking on March 23, Ong responded to concerns about the growing desire for more opposition representation in Parliament, emphasising that Singaporeans understand the importance of a stable and effective government during such challenging times.

Ong noted that, like the trust Singaporeans showed in the government during the Covid-19 pandemic, the electorate would make decisions that are best for the country’s future. “You don’t want a government bogged down by paralysis,” he said, referencing the need for a government that can act swiftly in the face of global changes.

Reflecting on his own experiences during the 2011 General Election, Ong shared his personal challenge in Aljunied GRC, where he and his team lost to the opposition. He recalled feeling as though he was “in quicksand” as the election campaign unfolded, symbolising the growing demand for opposition presence in Parliament.

However, Ong stressed that elections should aim to produce a functional and effective system of government. He acknowledged that while a stronger opposition presence is seen by many as a necessary check on the ruling party, the ultimate goal is an effective government. “It’s not about numbers,” he clarified, adding that the balance between the ruling party and the opposition is something that evolves with each election.

Ong also pointed out that Singapore’s political maturity isn’t determined solely by the number of opposition MPs but by the quality of governance and the relationship between the government and the people. “Do the people feel listened to? Are their concerns being acknowledged?” he asked, underlining that voters will assess both ruling and opposition MPs for integrity and their commitment to serving the public.

When asked about his future in the upcoming election, Ong remained diplomatic, stating that it would be up to Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to decide where he would be fielded. However, he expressed his attachment to Sembawang GRC, where he has served for a decade. Ong shared how his team has developed the constituency while preserving its unique character, from its natural landmarks like the hot spring and kampung mosque to its serene, village-like atmosphere.

Despite occasional criticism from new residents about the lack of large shopping centres, Ong reassured them that Sembawang’s “ulu” (remote) charm would not be altered, and that he was committed to maintaining the town’s distinctive appeal.
