Oil Leak from Shell Pipeline Affects Waters Near Bukom Islands

Spill Contained, Cleanup Efforts Underway, No Injuries Reported

On October 20, 2024, an oil leak occurred from a Shell pipeline between Bukom Island and Bukom Kecil, affecting Singapore’s waters. The leak began at 5:30 AM and was detected by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) around 1:00 PM. Shell confirmed the oil had spilled into a holding area, with some overflow reaching the water channel between the islands. The leak was stopped at approximately 3:00 PM.

MPA and Shell initiated cleanup efforts immediately, deploying boats and containment booms, while drones and satellites were used to track the spill. As of 6:00 PM, no new oil sightings were reported, and there was no impact on navigation safety. No injuries were reported, and Singapore’s National Parks Board confirmed no oil was observed in sensitive marine areas.

This incident follows an earlier spill in June 2024, which caused extensive damage along Singapore’s coastlines, including East Coast Park and Sentosa.
