NYP Launches $10 Million Fund for Sustainability Projects

The fund will support innovative sustainability projects through NYP’s Living Lab and community initiatives.

Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) launched a $10 million fund on November 3, 2024, to promote sustainability innovation within the community. The fund, part of NYP’s sustainability masterplan, will support projects under its NYP Living Lab, a space where sustainability solutions are tested before being implemented in real-world environments. These initiatives will see collaboration between NYP staff, students, and industry partners, including businesses looking to improve processes, local communities aiming to reduce environmental footprints, and start-ups testing their technologies.

The launch was part of the larger Eco Fest event at Teck Ghee Community Club, where NYP also introduced Project Rejuven-Aid. This initiative brought together around 300 students, staff, and grassroots volunteers to help renovate the homes of 56 seniors and low-income families. The project involved cleaning, painting, and repairing the homes of residents in need, enhancing both the living conditions and the sense of community.

In addition to these efforts, NYP unveiled several sustainability-driven activities, including free-cycle markets, e-waste collection drives, and a Repair Kopitiam, where residents could learn to repair broken appliances instead of discarding them. These initiatives are part of NYP’s broader goal to promote sustainable habits across Singapore’s neighborhoods, starting with Teck Ghee.

Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who attended the event, praised NYP for its contributions to creating a more sustainable and cohesive community. He emphasized the importance of youth engagement in purposeful activities that foster community spirit and environmental responsibility.
