NParks Investigates Incident of Python Injury After Removal from Car Engine

Singapore authorities look into potential animal cruelty after a snake gets injured in a rescue attempt.

SINGAPORE – The National Parks Board (NParks) is investigating an incident involving a 2-meter-long python that was injured after being removed from a car engine by members of the public. The python had become trapped in the engine compartment of a sports utility vehicle parked at a Housing Board car park in Marine Crescent on October 28.

The rescue operation began when the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Acres) received a call to assist with the trapped snake. Upon arrival, the Acres rescue team found the python coiled around a tube in the engine, and they were unable to safely reach the snake without the help of a mechanic. During this wait, a member of the public intervened and removed the snake by force, reportedly injuring it in the process. The three men involved in the incident had used sticks to poke at the snake before pulling it out by the tail and placing it in a flour bag.

NParks is now investigating the event to determine whether it constitutes animal cruelty. Under the Animals and Birds Act, individuals found guilty of causing cruelty to animals may face fines of up to $15,000, imprisonment of up to 18 months, or both.

In response to inquiries, Ryan Lee, Group Director of Wildlife Management at NParks, confirmed that the python is under medical care at the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation. He mentioned that the snake is responsive and alert.

Lee emphasized that snakes are shy creatures and typically avoid human contact. He advised the public to stay calm and maintain a safe distance if they encounter a snake, and to call NParks’ 24-hour Animal Response Centre at 1800-476-1600 for assistance. Additionally, he cautioned against attempting to handle snakes and recommended keeping pets on a tight leash to avoid confrontations.
