New Islamic College to Groom Religious Leaders, Those Who Can Contribute to Social Sector: PM Wong

Prime Minister announces new educational initiative aimed at training leaders in both religious and social sectors.

A new Islamic college in Singapore will offer a unique educational opportunity for individuals aiming to make a significant impact in both the religious and social sectors. The Singapore College of Islamic Studies (SCIS) will provide a four-year undergraduate course, with a choice of majoring in Islamic studies or social sciences. This initiative is designed to groom future religious leaders, known as asatizah, who are also well-versed in the social issues affecting modern societies.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong made the announcement on November 10, during a forum marking the fifth anniversary of M3, a partnership between three key Malay/Muslim organizations. The SCIS will collaborate with prestigious institutions, such as the Singapore University of Social Sciences, Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta, and the University of Jordan, to deliver its programs. These institutions will also be represented on the college’s advisory panel, contributing valuable insights on contemporary issues impacting Muslim minorities worldwide.

The establishment of SCIS is part of a broader effort by the Singaporean government to train scholars and religious educators who can provide relevant and thoughtful guidance to Muslim communities. PM Wong emphasized the importance of contextualizing religious education to meet the needs of a diverse and multicultural society like Singapore. He stressed that the SCIS will play a crucial role in helping the Muslim community navigate modern challenges while fostering greater trust and understanding with other communities in Singapore.

The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis), supported by the government, will oversee the governance of the SCIS, with Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir, the Mufti of Singapore, heading the steering committee. This initiative aims to create a strong pipeline of qualified asatizah who are equipped to serve the community and address contemporary issues with confidence.

In addition to the SCIS, PM Wong also highlighted government efforts to support the aspirations of the Malay/Muslim community to remain modern and progressive, while still preserving its unique culture and traditions. These initiatives include the revitalization of cultural precincts like Kampong Glam, which will feature new galleries and enhanced programs at the Malay Heritage Centre, as well as restoration works on the iconic Masjid Sultan.

Another significant project mentioned by PM Wong was the rejuvenation of the Tanjong Katong Complex in Geylang Serai. The complex, which is being renovated, will become a vibrant community hub upon its reopening in 2029, serving as an additional key location for the Malay/Muslim community. The relocation of the self-help group Mendaki to this complex will further strengthen the presence of M3 agencies in the area and help extend their reach to more families.

PM Wong also commended the impact of the M3 programs over the last five years, particularly the M3 youth mentoring initiatives, which have connected over 1,600 mentors with 5,700 youth. These programs, which are present in every M3@Towns precinct, have created numerous opportunities for the Malay/Muslim community to engage in meaningful service within their neighborhoods. With 4,000 volunteers across M3 agencies, the initiative continues to make significant strides in community development.

At the forum, Minister for Social and Family Development Masagos Zulkifli and Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Dr Maliki Osman also spoke about the successful projects and collaborations under M3, including the Project Dian@M3 initiative, which supports families in public rental flats aspiring to own homes. This program has engaged over 500 households, and M3 is now expanding its reach through partnerships with corporations like Changi General Hospital, which has facilitated community outreach efforts such as organizing fun learning activities for children and families.
