New App Lets S’pore Diners Buy Unsold Food at Big Discount, Helps Cut Food Waste

Yindii app offers customers a chance to buy surprise bags of unsold food at discounted prices, reducing food waste.

The Yindii app, launched in August 2024, allows diners in Singapore to purchase unsold food at up to 80% off before closing time, helping to reduce food waste. The app offers “surprise bags” filled with unsold menu items from participating eateries such as Paul, Baker & Cook, and SaladStop. Customers can order these bags in advance and pick them up at the end of the day.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to tackle food waste in Singapore, where food waste accounted for 11% of the total waste generated in 2023, equating to around 755,000 tonnes. Yindii aims to address this problem by providing a sustainable, affordable option for consumers, especially in light of rising inflation and increasing living costs.

Co-founder Mahima Rajangam Natarajan explained that the app was launched in Singapore due to the city’s focus on sustainability and reducing waste. Yindii is already operational in Hong Kong and Thailand, and it competes with other platforms like Just Dabao and Treatsure, which also promote food waste reduction.
