MRT Train Featuring Cautionary Messages Launched to Combat Molestation on Public Transport

The Singapore Police Force’s initiative aims to raise awareness and deter molestation and voyeurism on public transit.

SINGAPORE – In response to increasing cases of molestation and voyeurism on public transport, the Singapore Police Force (SPF), in collaboration with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and other organizations, launched a new “police concept train” on November 2, 2023. This initiative aims to raise awareness about these crimes and provide visible deterrents to would-be perpetrators.

The train, which operates on the North East Line, features six carriages adorned with cautionary messages such as “Molestation is a crime” and “You are being watched.” These messages are displayed on the floors, walls, and windows of the train, along with information about the penalties for molestation. Additionally, guidance for potential victims includes how to take note of the perpetrator’s appearance and how to alert the authorities.

The launch comes amid a rise in molestation cases, with 97 incidents reported on public transport in the first half of 2023, up from 84 in the same period in 2022. Although cases of voyeurism decreased from 35 to 23, the need for public vigilance remains high. The police are also working on increasing visibility by displaying messages about upskirt photography on MRT station platform doors and escalators.

This is just the beginning, as the program will roll out additional concept trains across the East-West Line, North-South Line, Circle Line, and Downtown Line over the next few months. The police also continue to work with SBS Transit, SMRT Corporation, and Certis Cisco on tackling crime in the transport network.

The concept train launch coincided with the Public Spiritedness Award ceremony, where Ms. Karine Lee was recognized for confronting a suspected voyeur at Yishun MRT station. In an act of courage, Lee noticed the suspect’s actions and called the police, helping to detain the man. This incident highlights the critical role of public awareness and community involvement in maintaining safety on public transport.
