Understanding and supporting late bloomers fosters their confidence and growth.
Patience in Parenting: Letting Children Set Their Pace
SINGAPORE – Parenting often involves managing expectations and celebrating individuality, especially when a child develops at their own unique pace. In October, my daughter approached us with a candid revelation: she might need to retake her GCE A-level examinations.
Currently in the midst of her exams, which conclude in late November, she has prepared herself—and us—for the possibility of an additional year, JC3, to solidify her knowledge and skills.
Embracing Growth on a Child’s Timeline
This experience is a reminder that a child’s worth and potential are not tied to how quickly they reach milestones. Late bloomers, when given the patience and support they need, often develop the resilience and confidence to thrive on their own terms.
Encouraging children to communicate openly and seek help when needed creates an environment where they feel safe to grow without undue pressure. As parents, it’s essential to focus not on the timeline but on the progress and learning that come with each step forward.
