Indonesian maid faces legal consequences after the tragic death of Zara Mei Orlic in a road accident.
An Indonesian maid, Lilyana Eva, 32, has been charged with causing grievous hurt by performing a rash act following a tragic incident in River Valley on January 23, 2024, which led to the death of 4-year-old Zara Mei Orlic.
Zara was crossing the road with Lilyana when she ran ahead of the maid and was struck by a car. The young girl suffered severe head injuries and was later pronounced dead at Singapore General Hospital. According to court documents, Lilyana failed to hold Zara’s hand or ensure her safety while crossing an unsignalised junction.
The accident occurred in Institution Hill, where the maid had previously been warned not to jaywalk with the children, yet continued to do so. The driver of the car, a 40-year-old Australian woman, was unable to see Zara due to a stationary vehicle obstructing her view. She realized too late that her car had hit the girl.
Lilyana’s case is scheduled for further hearings on November 13. If convicted, she could face up to four years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
