Natarajan Mohanraj faces charges for fatal accident and subsequent driving offences despite revoked licence.
A 27-year-old lorry driver, Natarajan Mohanraj, is accused of causing the death of Emeritus Professor Tan Yock Lin from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in a fatal accident on July 7, 2023. Mohanraj allegedly failed to control his vehicle while driving on Upper Thomson Road, resulting in the lorry mounting a kerb, colliding with a car, and causing the professor’s death. The collision also involved a van, leading to grievous injuries for two men.
Despite his driving licence being revoked on July 25, 2023, following the incident, Mohanraj allegedly continued driving in January and May 2024 on separate occasions. He faces 10 charges, including one for causing Prof Tan’s death, and is accused of driving a lorry in Sims Avenue without wearing a seatbelt in January 2024 and driving a lorry on the Ayer Rajah Expressway in May 2024 without the vehicle owner’s consent.
In the fatal accident, Prof Tan suffered an open skull fracture and could not be resuscitated. If convicted of causing death by driving without due care and attention, Mohanraj could face up to three years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. Each count of causing grievous hurt could result in up to two years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $5,000. Mohanraj’s pre-trial conference is scheduled for December 6.
