Authorities provide alternatives for seniors and less tech-savvy recipients of national service credits.
SINGAPORE – Senior Minister of State for Defence Zaqy Mohamad announced on November 13 that national servicemen unable to access their National Service (NS) LifeSG credits through the mobile app can request hard-copy vouchers. This initiative addresses the needs of seniors and individuals uncomfortable with digital transactions.
Details of the Distribution
The credits, valued at $200, are being distributed via the LifeSG app to over one million past and present national servicemen throughout November. These credits can be redeemed for household and lifestyle goods and services.
Approximately 25% of the recipients are above 60 years old. During a similar disbursement in 2022, 88% of servicemen over 60 successfully used their credits, while only 2% opted for hard-copy vouchers.
Government’s Stance on Accessibility
Responding to concerns from MP Ang Wei Neng (West Coast GRC), Mr. Zaqy emphasized that providing both digital and physical options ensures inclusivity and avoids creating a divide between digitally savvy individuals and others.
He also highlighted that 95% of national servicemen surveyed after the 2022 disbursement supported digital payments.
Concerns About Digital Security
Mr. Ang also questioned the potential vulnerability of digital payments to scams. Mr. Zaqy encouraged individuals to report specific cases for investigation, reiterating the government’s commitment to maintaining a secure system.
The government’s approach underscores a balance between embracing digital advancements and accommodating diverse needs.
