Court proceedings begin for Alverna Cher, who allegedly helped her former boyfriend take his own life in 2020
A funeral director is facing charges for allegedly assisting her former boyfriend’s suicide in 2020. Alverna Cher Sheue Pin, 41, denies the accusations and is claiming trial. She is charged with intentionally aiding 32-year-old Mr. Wee Jun Xiang in his death by nitrogen gas inhalation on May 16, 2020, and obstructing the course of justice.
Cher, the director and shareholder of City Funeral Singapore, had initially planned to plead guilty in 2023 but changed her mind. According to the prosecution, Cher was aware of Mr. Wee’s suicidal intentions since February 2020 and played a key role in his preparations for the act, including helping him acquire nitrogen gas and removing evidence after the incident.
On the day of his death, Mr. Wee reportedly drove to a car park with the nitrogen tank, and Cher arrived later to assist him by releasing liquid nitrogen into the car. She left the scene once he appeared to be unconscious, only returning later to find he had died. She allegedly disposed of the evidence and made a false report to the police, claiming Mr. Wee died of a heart attack.
The prosecution is calling 31 witnesses, including a forensic pathologist, who confirmed that Mr. Wee’s cause of death was consistent with suffocation due to oxygen deficiency. If found guilty, Cher faces significant legal consequences.
