Opposition parties form alliance to contest in the next Singapore general election
On October 28, 2023, four Singapore opposition parties signed an agreement to form a coalition ahead of the next general election, due by November 2025. The National Solidarity Party (NSP), Red Dot United (RDU), Singapore People’s Party (SPP), and Singapore United Party (SUP) aim to collaborate on shared goals, including avoiding three-cornered contests, crafting a manifesto, and considering shared candidates for the election.
While the coalition does not intend to have a dominant party or leader, RDU will serve as the secretariat for administrative coordination. The alliance hopes to contest between eight and ten constituencies and strengthen the opposition’s influence, with an emphasis on providing checks and balances to the government.
RDU’s Ravi Philemon emphasized the importance of maintaining individual party identities while working together for the common cause. The parties are in talks with others, including the Workers’ Party and Singapore Democratic Party, and are open to future collaboration.
The coalition’s manifesto, expected after the election is called, will address key issues such as inflation, cost of living, and wages, with the goal of offering Singaporeans a credible alternative and a balanced political landscape.
