Experts highlight key safety tips for kayakers to avoid dangerous currents and capsizes off Sentosa’s coast.
SINGAPORE – The tragic kayaking incident off Sentosa in October, which led to the death of a 33-year-old woman, has raised concerns about water safety, particularly around the Buran Channel. This area, located between Sentosa and Tekukor, is known for its challenging currents, and kayakers often face difficulties navigating the waters.
Experts stress the importance of preparation before heading out on the water, including checking tide conditions, weather forecasts, and being prepared to change plans if necessary. Ng Daojia, president of the Singapore Paddle Club, recommends that kayakers stay close to shore in calmer waters, particularly for beginners. He also advises paddlers to wear visible clothing and ensure they have the proper equipment, such as personal flotation devices (PFDs) and leashes.
A notable danger in the area is the ‘Capsize Corner’, known for strong currents and large waves, making it particularly risky for less experienced paddlers. Kayakers caught in these conditions may panic and grab onto floating security barriers, which can result in capsizing due to the strong push of the current. Clarence Chua, founder of Ninja Kayakers Foilers, recommends staying calm and letting the current carry you instead of fighting it, which could be more dangerous.
Kayakers are also encouraged to obtain a One Star Certification before venturing out on their own, especially when paddling in unfamiliar areas. This certification ensures that individuals have the necessary skills and knowledge to safely navigate Singapore’s waters.
