Singapore’s largest retailer moves towards autonomous logistics to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
FairPrice Group (FPG) has begun trials of autonomous vehicles (AVs) for transporting goods on public roads, following approval from the Land Transport Authority (LTA). This makes FPG the first organisation in Singapore authorised to deploy such vehicles for cargo transportation.
Two-Phase Testing Process
The trial’s first phase commenced on 18 October 2024, with the Zelos Z10 AV undergoing daily test runs, accompanied by a safety vehicle. Once LTA’s road safety standards are met, the second phase will begin, allowing the AV to operate independently without human supervision.
The Zelos Z10, designed for logistics, has a 1,500kg load capacity and a range of 210km per charge. It will initially transport goods between FPG’s Benoi and Joo Koon distribution centres, covering a distance of under 2km.
Sustainability and Efficiency Goals
The use of autonomous electric vehicles is expected to reduce carbon emissions and improve operational productivity. By automating cargo transfers, FPG aims to free up manpower for more complex tasks, aligning with its broader sustainability initiatives.
FPG also plans to expand its fleet to over 30 electric vehicles by the end of 2024, further reducing its environmental footprint.
Pioneering Logistics Technology
FPG’s chief executive, Vipul Chawla, hailed the trial as a significant milestone in leveraging technology to enhance the supply chain. “This is the culmination of many months of hard work to break new ground in autonomous logistics,” he said.
The Zelos Z10 is the first fully driverless AV in Singapore’s logistics sector approved for public road operations, underscoring the nation’s commitment to innovative and sustainable transport solutions.
Broader Autonomous Vehicle Trials
Singapore is advancing autonomous transport across industries. For example, Changi Airport Group and its partners initiated a self-driving bus trial in 2024 to transport workers in restricted airport zones, aiming to streamline routine tasks.
As AV technologies mature, they are poised to revolutionise Singapore’s logistics and transportation sectors, ensuring greater efficiency and sustainability.
