Creative Activism: How Singaporeans Support Gaza Amid Restrictions

Exploring alternative methods of advocacy, from film festivals to fundraising initiatives.

The streets of Central London are awash with green, red, and Palestinian flags as protestors call for a ceasefire. Among them, the Singaporean flag flies in quiet solidarity. While such public displays are common in cities like Melbourne, Toronto, and Seoul, in Singapore, similar activism is met with strict legal boundaries.

Since Israel’s declaration of war in October 2023, thousands of lives have been lost, predominantly Palestinians. Despite calls for justice worldwide, protests in Singapore are restricted due to public safety concerns. Public demonstrations are limited to specific conditions at Speaker’s Corner, with broader displays deemed too sensitive.

However, Singaporeans have found creative ways to advocate for the Palestinian cause. Local initiatives, like the Singapore Palestine Film Festival, have garnered widespread support. Featuring Palestinian films, the festival raised over $50,000 for humanitarian aid while fostering empathy and awareness. Similarly, peer groups like Humankind SG and startups like Moom Health are channeling profits into medical relief efforts.

Overseas, Singaporeans like Audrey Yang join large-scale marches, using social platforms to amplify their message. These experiences, though distant from home, provide a sense of community and hope, inspiring those unable to participate locally.

For many Singaporeans, the path forward lies in thoughtful dialogue and sustained advocacy within the bounds of the law. By embracing diverse methods of support, they continue to express solidarity, proving that meaningful activism can flourish even under constraints.
