Contractor Uncontactable After Homeowner Pays $150,000 for Novena Penthouse Renovation

A Novena penthouse owner faces a stalled renovation project and an untraceable contractor after paying over $150,000 for work that remains incomplete

A homeowner of a Novena penthouse is struggling to complete his renovation after paying over $152,000 to Renosaves Project, a renovation firm. Despite initially being satisfied with the company’s work on outdoor blinds, the homeowner, identified only as Mr K, found himself in a difficult situation when the contractor went uncontactable.

In May 2023, Mr K engaged Renosaves Project to renovate his 3,000 sq ft penthouse, including tasks like electrical, plumbing, and construction work. After a quote of $252,000 for the entire renovation, Mr K paid $152,000 in installments. The contractor promised to finish the work by September 2024, but by July, the penthouse was left in disarray, with uneven floors, construction materials scattered around, and damage to doors and ceilings.

After September, the contractor disappeared, and Mr K’s attempts to reach out to the company were unsuccessful. The situation worsened as a worker from Renosaves Project claimed he was owed five months’ salary and had not been able to access his belongings since September.

The Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) has received multiple complaints about Renosaves Project, including Mr K’s, who has also filed police reports regarding the unfinished work. The police have confirmed receipt of the complaints.

Consumers facing similar situations can file claims through the Small Claims Tribunals or take legal action for larger amounts. Case president Melvin Yong advises homeowners to hire CaseTrust-accredited contractors, ensuring that the contractors offer clear work schedules and protect consumers’ deposits.
