Metal bar incident prompts enhanced safety measures at worksite.
SINGAPORE – Construction on the viaduct of the upcoming Jurong Region Line (JRL) resumed following a safety timeout triggered by the fall of a metal bar at Jurong West Avenue 2 and Jalan Bahar. The incident, which occurred on 3 October 2024 at 9:30 a.m., fortunately resulted in no injuries or property damage.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) stated that no active construction work was underway at the time of the incident. The bar, a pre-tensioning component used to reinforce concrete during construction, fell due to “material fatigue,” a condition caused by repeated stress on structural elements.
A video shared on the SG Road Vigilante Facebook page showed the bar narrowly missing a lorry making a turn at the junction, emphasizing the potential severity of such incidents.
China Railway Construction Corporation, the primary contractor for the JRL project, collaborated with the LTA to address the situation. Enhanced safety measures have since been implemented, including comprehensive inspections of other JRL worksites to prevent recurrence.
LTA assured the public that engineers verified the viaduct’s structural integrity and emphasized its commitment to maintaining stringent safety protocols across all project sites.
