Ellil Mathiyan Lakshmanan was recognized for his dedication to helping cancer survivors, despite his own battle with the disease.
SINGAPORE – Ellil Mathiyan Lakshmanan, 65, a cancer survivor, was honored at the President’s Volunteerism and Philanthropy Awards on November 13, 2024, for his remarkable work supporting cancer patients and survivors. Diagnosed with both rectal and testicular cancer in 2011, Lakshmanan had to undergo a life-altering procedure, resulting in a permanent stoma bag. Despite facing immense physical and emotional challenges, he co-founded the Ostomy Association of Singapore in 2014 to offer emotional support and guidance to other patients.
Lakshmanan’s commitment to helping others has impacted nearly 800 individuals over the years. Beyond his full-time role running a security services company, he is actively involved in several cancer-related initiatives, including TalkMed Relay For Life, a global cancer awareness and fundraising movement. He also coordinates the Cancer Can Give movement, which encourages survivors to give back to society, and mentors with the SingHealth Patient Advocacy Network.
At the awards ceremony, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam lauded Lakshmanan and other awardees for their selfless contributions to the community. Lakshmanan received the award in the People of Good (Senior) category. Despite his achievements, he expressed that being nominated by the Singapore Cancer Society was already a significant honor, with the award serving as further motivation to continue his work.
Lakshmanan shared his heartfelt message with others battling cancer: “Don’t give up, focus on the treatment, get better, and there’s life after cancer.” He also encouraged other seniors to engage in volunteer work, stating that cancer survivors, like anyone else, can contribute meaningfully to society.
