Bouncer Sentenced to Jail and Caning for Role in Fatal Orchard Road Brawl

Offender abetted possession of a weapon and concealed evidence in deadly clash.

Incident Overview
Mohamad Zachary Danial Mohamad Azhar, 23, received an eight-month and six-week jail sentence, alongside six strokes of the cane, for his involvement in a violent brawl outside Concorde Hotel on Orchard Road. The August 2023 incident resulted in the death of Mr. Mohammad Isrrat Mohd Ismail, who succumbed to multiple injuries the same day.

Charges and Actions
Zachary pleaded guilty to abetting the possession of an offensive weapon and causing evidence to disappear. As a bouncer at Club Rumours, he handed a bread knife with a 30cm blade to an accomplice, Muhammad Shahrulnizam Osman (Nizam), during the altercation.

The fight erupted when Mr. Isrrat and Nizam encountered members of a secret society. Nizam used the bread knife to slash several individuals before he and Mr. Isrrat fled.

Zachary later discovered a bloodstained knife believed to be the one he provided and took steps to hide it, along with other weapons from the club’s locker. Despite attempts to dispose of evidence, he surrendered the knife after being contacted by a colleague.

Court’s Sentencing
Deputy Public Prosecutor Brian Tan emphasized Zachary’s high culpability in impeding justice. The court noted that Zachary witnessed the knife being used and deliberately tried to conceal its role in the offense.

Nizam, facing multiple charges, is set to plead guilty on November 22.
