Questions Over Biden’s Campaign Future as Financial Support Dips
US President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign has faced a slowdown in fundraising, with several major events now postponed, according to multiple Democratic sources. Originally planned in cities like Austin, Denver, and California, these events were put on hold after Biden tested positive for COVID-19 on July 17, 2024. Despite this, Biden’s campaign spokesman Kevin Munoz insisted that fundraisers would proceed as scheduled, citing discrepancies in Reuters’ reporting.
However, donations have reportedly taken a hit, with several major donors reconsidering their financial support due to doubts about Biden’s ability to continue in the race. The Biden Victory Fund, which had hoped to raise US$50 million in July, was on track to collect less than half of that amount by mid-month. A source described the situation, saying, “There are a lot of donors who have said they won’t put another dime in this race.”
Biden’s campaign finance issues come amidst increasing concern from both Democratic donors and party members. Some donors, such as Hollywood actor George Clooney, have publicly urged Biden to exit the race. Meanwhile, Vice-President Kamala Harris was scheduled to meet with major donors on July 19, as advisers to Biden consider what actions to take next.
As Biden’s fundraising efforts slow, the Democratic National Convention (DNC) continues its process to nominate Biden formally. On July 19, the DNC rules committee outlined a virtual voting process aimed at ensuring Biden’s nomination is confirmed ahead of the August convention. Critics argue that the early virtual vote could be an attempt to bypass the primary process, while DNC officials argue it’s necessary to avoid potential legal challenges in key states.
Despite mounting pressure, Biden has maintained that he plans to stay in the race, though several Democratic officials have expressed doubts about his long-term prospects. As the campaign faces internal challenges and external scrutiny, it remains unclear how Biden’s nomination process will unfold.
