Biden Faces Mounting Pressure to Exit Presidential Race

Illness, Political Strains, and Party Divisions Cloud His Campaign

WASHINGTON – US President Joe Biden, grappling with Covid-19 and isolated in his Delaware beach house, finds himself at a crossroads. Facing mounting pressure from party allies to step aside ahead of the presidential election, Biden’s frustration has grown toward figures like former President Barack Obama and ex-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, whom he perceives as key players in efforts to oust him.

Internal Tensions Emerge
Biden’s presidency now faces its most challenging moment, as leaks and public criticism from prominent Democrats signal diminishing confidence in his re-election bid. While Biden remains publicly resolute about staying in the race, insiders reveal discussions about potential withdrawal dates and announcements.

Close aides describe Biden as increasingly irritated with Obama’s apparent lack of direct support. Once Biden’s political ally who helped elevate him to the vice presidency, Obama’s recent absence amid calls for Biden’s withdrawal has added to the President’s sense of betrayal. Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, instrumental in advancing Biden’s legislative successes, are now perceived as orchestrating pressure for his exit.

A Divided Democratic Party
High-ranking Democrats, including Senators Martin Heinrich and Sherrod Brown, have joined calls for Biden to step aside, fearing a potential party loss in November’s election. Representative Seth Moulton criticized Biden’s recent debate performance, citing concerns about his cognitive sharpness. Privately, some estimate that up to 80% of House Democrats prefer Biden to exit, despite a public show of support.

Adding to the strain is dwindling campaign fundraising. Reports suggest Biden’s campaign may raise less than half of its July target of $50 million, reflecting waning donor confidence after a lackluster debate performance.

A Complicated Legacy
Biden’s relationship with Obama, once strengthened by their eight years in the White House and personal tragedies, has grown strained. Biden has long harbored frustration over Obama’s past decision to back Hillary Clinton in 2016, which he viewed as a slight to his presidential aspirations.

Despite internal turmoil, Biden’s allies, including Senator Chris Coons, remain steadfast in defending his capacity to serve a second term. Coons highlighted Biden’s recent accomplishments, including hosting a NATO summit, as evidence of his leadership.

The Road Ahead
While Biden insists on staying in the race, the political machinations within his party continue to cast doubt. With Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s upcoming visit on July 24, any announcement about Biden’s future may be delayed, but his next steps could shape the Democratic Party’s trajectory for years to come.
