Beware of Phishing E-mails Asking Taxpayers to View Property Tax Notices via WeTransfer: IRAS

Fraudulent e-mails impersonate IRAS to deceive taxpayers into clicking malicious links

The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) issued a warning on November 14, 2024, about a new phishing scam targeting taxpayers. The scam involves fraudulent e-mails that appear to be from IRAS, prompting recipients to view their property tax notices via WeTransfer.

How the Scam Works
The phishing e-mails direct taxpayers to a suspicious URL claiming that their property tax notice is available for viewing on the myTax Portal. The e-mails even include company site details and a tax reference number to make the scam appear more authentic.

However, IRAS clarified that it does not send any notices or tax-related communications through unsecured platforms such as WeTransfer. All official tax transactions and notices are securely posted on the myTax Portal (mytax.iras.gov.sg), which requires SingPass authentication for access.

Precautions and Actions
IRAS urged the public to be cautious and ignore any suspicious e-mails that ask for personal details or prompt clicking on unusual links. It is essential to avoid providing personal information, such as credit card or bank account details, in response to these e-mails.

If someone has already fallen victim to the scam, they are advised to file a police report.
