Young Ridhwan Fadli’s inspiring journey from a life-threatening illness to academic success.
At just 10, Ridhwan Fadli faced a severe health crisis. A simple flu escalated into an influenza infection that led to a heart attack and left him on life support for 14 days. The complications, including a stroke, paralyzed him from the waist down, impacting his speech and cognitive abilities.
Despite these challenges, Ridhwan, a student at North View Primary School, remained resilient. “I never felt like giving up,” the now 12-year-old shared, crediting his teachers and family for their unwavering support.
A Determined Comeback
After three months in the hospital, Ridhwan returned to school in Primary 5. His teachers worked tirelessly to help him catch up, while his parents provided daily support—his mother as his full-time caregiver and his father as his driver. Friends also played a vital role in assisting with his studies.
Now a wheelchair user, Ridhwan successfully sat for the 2024 Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), joining 40,894 other students. He took foundation-level subjects, which eased his academic stress, and achieved favorable grades, earning him a place at Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary School.
A Milestone Year for PSLE
This year marked the fourth under Singapore’s new Achievement Level (AL) scoring system, with grades ranging from AL8 (lowest) to AL1 (highest proficiency). The system now includes full subject-based banding in secondary education, allowing students flexibility in taking subjects at varying academic levels.
Family’s Support and Hope
Ridhwan’s father, Mr. Mohammad Fadli, expressed pride in his son’s courage and positivity. Despite financial struggles from medical expenses, the family remains optimistic. “We have no worries about his results; we just want the best for him,” said Mr. Fadli.
Ridhwan’s story is a testament to perseverance, resilience, and the power of support in overcoming life’s toughest challenges.
