Inter-monsoon conditions bring thundery showers and higher lightning activity across Singapore
SINGAPORE – Prepare for wet afternoons as thundery showers are forecast for most days during the first half of November, with some extending into the evening, according to the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS).
Shift in Weather Patterns
The transition from the south-west monsoon to inter-monsoon conditions is driving the current weather. Characterized by light and variable winds, this period is also known for intense thunderstorms and elevated lightning activity. MSS notes that November typically ranks among Singapore’s wettest months.
Temperature and Rainfall Outlook
Daily maximum temperatures: Expected to range between 33°C and 35°C on most days.
Rainfall: Despite frequent showers, below-average rainfall is anticipated for the first two weeks of the month.
October’s Record Heat and Rainfall
Last month saw soaring temperatures and sporadic rain:
Record-breaking heat: On October 9, Admiralty recorded 36.3°C, the highest temperature ever logged in October, surpassing previous records from 2001 and 2019.
Rainfall highlights: Jurong West experienced the highest daily total rainfall of 88.4mm on October 23.
Improving Haze Conditions
Increased rainfall towards the end of October alleviated haze conditions caused by transboundary pollution earlier in the month.
As November progresses, keep an umbrella handy to navigate sudden downpours and heightened lightning risks.
