Global Biodiversity Framework to Take Center Stage in Discussions on Nature Conservation
The Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted in 2022, is set to be a key focus at COP16, which will take place in Cali, Colombia, from October 21 to November 1, 2024. This framework, often likened to the Paris Agreement for climate change, aims to halt and potentially reverse the ongoing decline of biodiversity by setting specific goals and targets. These include restoring 30% of degraded ecosystems and protecting 30% of global land and seas by 2030.
At COP16, representatives from nearly 200 countries will gather to create an action plan to translate these ambitious goals into concrete actions. Key topics, such as closing the biodiversity finance gap and making tangible progress toward the framework’s targets, will be addressed. Audrey Tan and David Fogarty discuss the upcoming conference and its implications for biodiversity conservation with Will McGoldrick, Asia-Pacific managing director for The Nature Conservancy.
