A Collaborative Path: DPM Lawrence Wong on Singapore’s Future Plans

Forward SG report outlines inclusive strategies for addressing national challenges and fostering community partnerships.

Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Government, citizens, and various community groups in shaping the nation’s future. This commitment to a bottom-up approach was highlighted during the unveiling of the Forward Singapore report, a comprehensive 180-page document that encapsulates 16 months of dialogue with the public.

The report proposes policies aimed at supporting vulnerable groups, including low-income families, mid-career workers, and seniors, through financial aid and infrastructure improvements. It also stresses the need for broader definitions of success and collective responsibility among Singaporeans.

Key Initiatives and Priorities
DPM Wong noted that immediate attention would be given to critical concerns like housing and retirement, with detailed plans expected in Budget 2024. Upcoming initiatives include:

Age Well SG: A program to support seniors in aging comfortably at home.
ComLink+: Enhanced support for low-income families.
Involuntary Unemployment Support: Details to be disclosed in Budget 2024.
“These initiatives reflect our commitment to adapt policies based on ground needs and ensure long-term sustainability,” said Mr. Wong.

Shaping Policies Responsibly
Acknowledging the challenges posed by societal disruptions, the Government plans to increase spending in a thoughtful and accountable manner. DPM Wong highlighted the importance of designing policies that provide assurances to Singaporeans while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

Teamwork and Future Vision
The Deputy Prime Minister credited the 4G team’s collaborative efforts for the success of the report, citing regular work group meetings and deep-dive sessions with ministries. He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to address future challenges collectively.

“The road ahead will not be easy,” he said, “but our history and the lessons from tackling Covid-19 show that we can overcome obstacles together.”
