Four Dead and Several Injured in Fatal Crash During Lunar New Year Journey
A devastating accident in Taoyuan, north-western Taiwan, on January 25, has left four people dead and several others injured after an electric vehicle crashed and caught fire. The incident took place on National Freeway 1 in the evening, as the family of eight was travelling to visit relatives ahead of the Lunar New Year.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5, which was designed to seat five people, was carrying two adults and six children. The family’s journey turned to tragedy when the vehicle collided with a traffic barrier and ignited. The Taoyuan Fire Department rushed to the scene, putting out the flames and confirming that the 40-year-old driver, a father of the family, had died in the crash.
Seven passengers, including the driver’s wife and children, were transported to the hospital. Among the victims, three children—two boys and a girl aged between two and ten—succumbed to their injuries the following day. The driver’s wife remains in a coma, while their eight-year-old son has been intubated and is awaiting surgery. An 11-year-old girl suffered second-degree burns, and a four-year-old girl is reported to be conscious.
The vehicle, which was overcrowded with passengers, was not designed to accommodate so many people. The tragic accident occurred just days before the Lunar New Year, leaving the family in mourning.
