ISD Protects Public Space to Allow Singapore’s Democratic Process to Function: PM Lee

PM Lee emphasizes ISD’s role in safeguarding Singapore’s stability amidst domestic and foreign threats.

Singapore – Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong stressed the Internal Security Department’s (ISD) importance in ensuring the continued stability of Singapore’s democratic process, amid threats from both external sources and internal vulnerabilities. In his speech at the ISD’s 75th anniversary dinner, PM Lee emphasized the evolving challenges the country faces, from foreign influence to the management of domestic divisions.

He highlighted that despite nation-building successes, political and religious tensions persist, citing issues like the US-China tensions and the Israel-Hamas conflict. These disputes, PM Lee noted, could fuel divisions in Singapore’s diverse society if not addressed appropriately.

Terrorism remains a significant concern, with transnational Islamist groups still active in neighboring regions. The rise of lone-wolf attackers, motivated by extremist ideologies, poses a new form of threat, further complicating security concerns.

Additionally, PM Lee mentioned foreign espionage and influence operations, pointing to specific incidents like the 2017 expulsion of a professor for trying to manipulate Singapore’s leadership. The ISD plays a crucial role in detecting and neutralizing these covert activities, which threaten both national security and sovereignty.

In closing, PM Lee reiterated that Singapore’s success in mitigating security threats is not by chance, but due to the ISD’s vigilance, ensuring the nation remains safe and united.
