Forward Singapore: A New Collaborative Pathway

DPM Lawrence Wong emphasizes partnership-driven solutions for Singapore’s future challenges.

The Forward Singapore report, spanning 180 pages and the result of 16 months of dialogue, sets a fresh direction for the nation’s progress. Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong underscored the government’s commitment to fostering collaboration among citizens, businesses, and community groups rather than relying on traditional top-down approaches.

A Whole-of-Singapore Partnership
“This is more than an engagement exercise—it’s a partnership,” DPM Wong stated, highlighting a collective approach involving all sectors of society. The report focuses on addressing pressing issues such as housing, retirement, and support for vulnerable groups, including:

Financial aid for the less privileged
Enhanced infrastructure for mid-career workers and seniors
Support for low-income families through programs like ComLink+
Additionally, the government aims to shift societal mindsets, fostering broader definitions of success and stronger community responsibility.

Immediate and Upcoming Priorities
Key initiatives include:

Age Well SG: A national program to enable seniors to age comfortably at home, with more details expected soon.
Unemployment Support Scheme: Policies for involuntarily unemployed individuals will be unveiled in Budget 2024.
Housing and retirement improvements: Policies already in implementation will continue to address citizens’ primary concerns.
DPM Wong emphasized the need for careful design and responsible resource management as the government prepares for increased social spending to meet evolving needs.

The 4G Team’s Collaborative Effort
The report reflects the extensive collaboration within the 4G leadership team, who engaged in monthly workgroup meetings and deep dives into specific policy areas. “This process has strengthened our team dynamics and collective understanding,” said Mr. Wong, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in tackling Singapore’s challenges.

A Call for Confidence and Cooperation
Drawing lessons from the nation’s history and the collective resilience during the Covid-19 pandemic, Mr. Wong expressed optimism about Singapore’s ability to adapt and thrive. “The road ahead will not be easy, but together, we can overcome these challenges,” he said, committing to an inclusive approach that values feedback and partnership.
