Singapore, Malaysia Support UN Resolution for Humanitarian Truce in Israel-Hamas Conflict

The two countries back the resolution, despite differing diplomatic ties with Israel and Palestine.

Singapore and Malaysia Endorse UN Resolution Calling for Humanitarian Assistance
SINGAPORE — Both Singapore and Malaysia voted in support of a United Nations resolution calling for humanitarian assistance and a humanitarian truce to address the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. This decision was made despite differences in their diplomatic relations with Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

At a joint press conference during the Singapore-Malaysia Leaders’ Retreat, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong emphasized that these differences would not affect the two countries’ bilateral relations. Singapore maintains diplomatic relations with Israel while also supporting the Palestinian Authority, while Malaysia has no diplomatic ties with Israel but enjoys strong relations with the Palestinian leadership.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia reiterated the importance of peace and the immediate cessation of violence, particularly against civilians. He added that Malaysia has been actively involved in supporting a peaceful resolution and is in touch with Arab leaders to seek an end to the violence.

The UN resolution, which was supported by 121 countries, calls for a ceasefire and the unhindered provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza, while urging a return to a peaceful two-state solution to the conflict.

Singapore’s Home Affairs and Law Minister, K. Shanmugam, also expressed the country’s strong stance by supporting the resolution. He noted that the conflict had led to significant civilian casualties and emphasized the need for an immediate truce. He added that Singapore would continue to send humanitarian aid to the region and that local leaders had been briefed on the government’s position.

This development highlights the shared humanitarian concerns between Singapore and Malaysia despite their different diplomatic stances on the broader conflict.
